Raccoon Outdoor Enclosure

I am raising money so I can put a better outdoor enclosure in my yard for the young raccoons that I raise for release. As a former director at a wildlife center, I fell in love with these adorable, intelligent little guys . I had pre-exposure shots that I paid for with my own money. These babies usually stay with their moms for the first year and while I cannot provide everything that mom would I do try to provide the best replication of how they would grow up with mom. 

The babies I receive come to me through different circumstances, sometimes removed from attics and mom chased off, sometime orphaned due to something happening to mom, or possibly mom in the process of moving them to another location and becomes unable to continue carrying them. In any case, the result for them if not brought to a rehabber would most likely be death. 

Part of the process for them to grow up is to move to an outside cage as they grow up, like leaving the den. The past couple of years I have used cages that were too small and could not be easily kept clean. I would like to buy a small dog kennel that I can walk into and add a roof to it. Site will be prepared by digging out, adding a layer of sand and then small rocks which will be better drainage. Top of the rocks will be covered with mats for horse stalls from Tractor Supply which will soften a fall as they learn to climb. The kennel will also be purchased from Tractor Supply and runs around $300. I will also be purchasing the rocks, sand and roofing material, plus hardware cloth wire to lay preventing digging in or out. 

Raccoons are masters of escape and manipulating latches and locks so kennel will be re-enforced with hardware coth around the roof, corners and anywhere else there might be places for escape. 

I will be doing all the labor myself, only need help with the materials.
