My name is Adriana and I’m the daughter of Anthony Wright. For those who know me, you’ve probably heard me talk about my dad—funny stories, nostalgic moments, and maybe some saddening experiences we’ve gone through with him over the past decade.
Over the past few years, my dad has struggled with his health and homelessness. These things go hand-in-hand for him because, although his physical health has not been the best due to neurological issues and muscular dystrophy, it took a drastic decline as of recently, causing it to be nearly impossible for him to perform basic daily tasks on his own—like shower, eat, and walk. He chose to start living out of his car, because of the freedom he had to “go and do.” Living with me was an option, but even living in my spare room would’ve been nearly impossible without a caregiver. (He falls often and has hit his head many times which we believe has caused a decline in his mental health) So he chose to hit the road again.
On Dec 17, 2022, we realized we hadn’t heard from him since the 2nd and he wasn’t answering calls—which, if you know Anthony, is rare because this man LOVES to talk! So we all started to get very worried. We ended up finding out he was arrested in Indiana. After talking to his appointed public defender, the report was made clear to me:
My dad was driving from Houston (where my 21 yr old brother, Angelo lives) to Ohio (where his brother, my Uncle Israel lives). He was either driving too slow or was stopped on the side of the highway, where officers stopped him. They asked if he was okay a few times, but he was zoned out and then finally responded with a mental breakdown and tried to continue driving. This was concerning to officers so they had him arrested and impounded his vehicle. Yesterday, Dec 27th he was released and taken to a homeless shelter in Indianapolis. However after contacting the homeless shelter, we were told he was not there. Today, Dec 28th is his 57th birthday and he is spending it in Indiana in the middle of a snow storm with not even a phone for us to contact him. Myself, Angelo, my mother, and his siblings have started a lost person report and are trying to figure out how to find him, get him home, care for his medical conditions, and help him find peace with his family.
My dad is a great guy with a great sense of humor despite all he’s gone through. He is essentially crippled, with recently developed mental health issues. He served in the Air Force from 1982-1995 however VA has declined all of his claims for disability benefits. He lives off of Social Security and uses it to survive for gas and food on the road. Our plan is to use the funds we raise to find him, purchase a plane ticket to and from Indiana, pay off his court fees, and set up a handicap-friendly room in my home for him to live comfortably.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and thank you for your donations and prayers.
