I NEED YOUR HELP TO GO TO NEW YORK UNIVERSITY

My name is Caleb Adebayo and my life’s goal is to ensure everyone- starting from my country- has access to clean and affordable energy.

I am a lawyer and an environmentalist and I run a small environmental nonprofit called Earthplus which is focused on advocacy for and creating awareness around environmental issues as well as influencing environmental behaviour, both of citizens and government. I need your support to make my dream of getting a Masters in Environmental and Energy Law come to pass.

Early this year, I gained admission to New York University School of Law (NYU Law) for a Masters in Environmental and Energy Law. Alongside the admission, I was offered the Deans Award Scholarship for $25, 000. While that is exciting, my tuition fee for attending NYU is $68, 934 and the Scholarship barely covers up to half of it. Without financial support I may never be able to attend NYU Law. This is why I need you- to help make my dream come true.

I graduated from Obafemi Awolowo University in 2015 with a 4.1 CGPA and proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, Lagos Campus, where I aced the Bar finals with a 2.1 Grade in 2016, before being called to the Nigerian Bar. Since then, I have worked Dispute Resolution and Transactional Roles, with the bulk of my time spent in Energy Law practice.

For as long as I can remember, I have been passionate about energy and the environment- particularly how to use the instrumentality of law to enable access to affordable, efficient and clean energy solutions for all. This is what inspired me to both take up a role in a law firm where I could learn the intersection of these sectors and to start my environmental nonprofit organization. The experience and knowledge gained in all of this inspired the pursuit of an LLM. My plan is to after my LLM return to Nigeria and consult for the Nigerian Government in the energy sector, particularly on how we can deliver clean energy solutions to all Nigerians- urban, semi-urban, rural, and very rural. I am a firm believer in the concept that no one should live without energy. For this reason, I have written and spoken on issues surrounding energy access, supply and security over the past half decade. My writings on energy and the environment have been published in the Business Day, Vanguard, This Day, The Nigerian Tribune, The Guardian and The Sun newspapers and elsewhere.

Currently, I curate a series known as the Energy Solutions for the Future broadcast through which I engage different leading energy experts on various concerns in the Nigerian energy sector and how to craft meaningful pathways forward for a sustainable energy future. At my nonprofit, Earthplus, we are also constantly contributing to advocacy and policy discussions around environmental issues.

As a testimony to the work I do, in 2016, I was admitted as a Fellow into the Barrack Obama Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Regional Leadership Center (RLC) Fellowship as well as the US Consulate Carrington Youth Fellowship Initiative (CYFI), both in recognition of my contribution to delivering positive change in society. In the same year, the United Nations Alliance of Civilisation named me as one of 20 peacebuilders in Africa. In 2018, in recognition of the work I do in environmental sustainability I was awarded the JCI Ten Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP) Award for Environmental/Moral Leadership.

All of these have only driven me to do more for my community. This Masters programme will enable me learn more about this niche area, explore best practices, expand my network and return to Nigeria with the requisite knowledge to deliver relevant solutions for the Nigerian government and the private sector.

Additionally, a few months ago, I was selected as the Student Ambassador of NYU School of Law LLM Class of 2020/2021 to the New York City Bar Association (NYCBA). After careful scrutiny, I was also admitted into the Energy Committee of the NYCBA, another testimony to my commitment to the energy space.

I find myself at the cusp of a new phase of my life- a pathway that will define the scope and strength of my contribution to society after now- and I do not want to miss out on it. I want to live out a life where I use the law as a tool of bridging the gap between government, private sector and civil society in order to deliver on environmentally friendly, cost-effective, innovative, effective and accessible energy for everyone, first in Nigeria, then across Africa. This Masters programme will provide me that opportunity. Please support me in this quest.

The sum of the outstanding tuition fee is $43, 934 (approx. N17, 134, 260, converted at the rate of N390/$). While this may seem quite enormous, every small contribution makes a world of difference, no matter how small. Please support this young energy and environment enthusiast to go to school.

Thank you for taking time out to read. And bless your heart for your contribution.
