Please read Cortney's story below.  She is a true hero and lost her car saving three residents that were in a home that caught on fire the morning of 12/20/18.  Let's get her a car for Christmas!!

Crews arrived on scene in less than a minute to find the rear unit fully engulfed in flames, according to a press release from the city of Mentor.

Due to the intensity of the fire, mutual aid was summoned from neighboring departments, comprising Leroy, Painesville Township, Concord Township, Painesville City, Mentor-on-the Lake, Fairport Harbor, Kirtland, Eastlake and Chardon.

Firefighters performed an aggressive fire attack and primary search, and shifted their efforts to defensive operations. A secondary search confirmed that all occupants were clear of the structure.

Courtney Noble, a caregiver at the group home, managed by New Avenues to Independence, Inc., had heard cracking and popping from the garage area, and she opened the door to the garage to find heavy smoke and flames. She immediately evacuated one resident in a wheelchair and two other residents that were ambulatory and called 911. A fourth resident was out of town visiting family for the holiday.

The evacuees were cared for at a neighboring child daycare facility as firefighters continued to fight the blaze.

New Avenues to Independence CEO Karen Knavel called Noble's efforts heroic and praised the emergency responders.

"While we are deeply saddened by this tragedy, we are very grateful to the Mentor Fire Department for its quick and thorough response, and to the Lake County Board of Developmental Disabilities for helping us quickly find temporary living accommodations for our residents. We also immediately informed North Coast Community Homes, the owner of the house, of the situation and are keeping the agency fully updated as we learn more.

"The safety of our residents is always our number one priority. Nothing is more important to us. We will continue to fully cooperate with fire and county authorities on their investigation."
