For those who don’t know me
My name is Daniella, I am a 22 year old Autistic & ADHD student studying forensic psychology
I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2019 after years of chronic widespread pain. Since then my health has been a rocky mountain.
I have frequent muscle spasms in my legs (and across my whole body) - if you have ever had a Charlie horse when working out etc then you know how bad that pain is! For me, that pain is an hourly occurrence.
The NHS are so overstretched and underfunded that they don’t recognise the struggles in chronic pain patients - infact my recent doctor actually tried to remove fibromyalgia off of my medical records as I’m “too young to have this level of disability” - but disability doesn’t care about age.
I’ve been given a wheelchair through the NHS - which I thought would be amazingly life changing. Unfortunately, the chair is unusable outside of my flat as the roads in my area are too steep and unstable for me to go out on my own.
This again has put a massive hammer in me gaining any form of independence as I cannot use the chair without having someone to push me. (Which also defeats the purpose of a self propelling chair). Due to the underfunding in the NHS, they cannot provide people who have use of their legs electric or power assisted wheelchair and I luckily still have some function in my legs (albeit very painful).
I had a private assessment through an amazing charity who are helping me source grants for a chair and an electric add on I need to give me back my independence and they have quoted me for the Quickie Model QS5 X chair with the Decon E-Move add on. The total cost comes to £9374.20
In an ideal world, I’d love to pay for this myself. Until the last year or so, I had been working since I was 13, constantly earning my own money and paying for my own things. At the moment, I’m struggling to attend a whole 4 hour day in university… let alone trying to work alongside this. I’m trying to source money through charity grants, but to make systems fair they can only donate a small amount therefore meaning I have to crowdfund the rest of the money.
I’m taking the Tesco’s motto very seriously at the moment - every little really does help.
50p, £1, any donation means the world to me and it’s one step closer to being able to live properly again.
if you can’t afford to donate, a share would be so so greatly appreciated ❤️
*UPDATE*
As of December we have officially raised enough to buy the wheelchair and I’m so so so so so grateful for this!
I’m still a long way from independence though. The power add on (which allows me to self propel with ease) is still £6,613.90 away. I’m searching for more grants but there’s very few charities left.
any donation or share goes such a long way and I appreciate everything so much ❤️
