I'm excited to announce that I've been accepted to the MFA program at Columbia University, my dream school! I still can't believe it!
But now that I've been accepted, I face a crazy dilemma. By attending, I'm likely to accrue hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt, interest included. This terrifies me. Yet if I don't go, I know I'll always wonder what could've come from getting a master's degree at Columbia University. As someone whose dream career is to become an English Professor, taking this leap is my greatest opportunity into academia. After these past few years of teaching and tutoring around the Bay Area, I am more sure of this career path than ever.
The Columbia MFA has an acceptance rate of less than 1% and is considered second only to University of Iowa as the best MFA program in the world. But it also has one of the highest tuitions — and most scarcely funded — at $72,000 a year, not including living expenses.
I've set this GoFundMe to a target goal of $50,000, which is ridiculous, I know, but didn't look as ridiculous as $144,000, which will be my total cost of tuition. Anything and everything helps. You are all so much appreciated.
My way of saying thanks: at Columbia I'll be completing my first book-length manuscript, so if you donate, expect — besides my endlessly enduring gratitude — a free copy once it's published! Or a total refund of your investment if the book sucks! Hope you like vampire novels! Just kidding. ;)
