GET GAZE TO FRINGE!!!

Hello all!

Welcome to Gaze, written and directed by Lilly Camyab, and produced by Sadie Mears and Anya Gerasimenko. This is the Bristol Dramsoc Edinburgh Fringe Show for 2023! Gaze is a play about being watched, examining the penetrative nature of misogyny in all of our lives. Julia is hosting a dinner party, and you’re invited. As her guests’ and the audiences’ searing eyes tighten upon her, Julia’s world starts to unravel. As the play explodes into psychological hyperbole, breaking free from traditional theatre structure, Gaze asks the question: are we all complicit in the male gaze?

Why Gaze?

Despite its heavy themes, Gaze, first and foremost, is an engaging, entertaining piece of theatre. The play swings from dark comedy to psychological thriller, a reflection of the messiness and confusion of our own biases and opinions, constantly adapting and influencing those around us. We feel passionately that not only is this an important show for audiences to see, but something dynamic and trailblazing to be enjoyed. We are an all-female prod team who are not afraid to say we are good at what we do.

Reflecting on the experience of far too many women and girls, it is the hard truth that misogyny still permeates every aspect of society. Too often misogyny and harm towards women is portrayed in the extreme; more often than not, misogyny is latent and often unnoticed. Perpetrators are not always obvious either, and we acknowledge our own roles in feeding into the system we find ourselves in. We hope Gaze to be a challenging, but enlightening experience for all cast and production in addressing our own biases and rebuilding the world in which we live.

What your money will go towards:

Bristol DramSoc prides itself on providing industry-level opportunities at the most accessible level possible. This meant that we were able to take a loan from our society to put on this show, covering travel, the cost of accommodation, and our venue hire. Without this loan, our cast and crew would not have had the opportunity to take a show to Fringe and perform, and we are incredibly grateful and honoured to represent the society and receive this! But, indeed, this is a loan, and we must pay it back. 100% of donations will go to DramSoc, so we can continue facilitating many more years of life-changing experiences for our members. We cannot change the whole theatre industry, but we have certainly started here in DramSoc, and hope to be able to raise this money to continue the journey of redefining how theatre is made.
