Get Gerry Back to Australia
Donation protected
Gerry is currently in Intensive Care in Colombo National Hospital, Sri Lanka.
He was on his way back from Holland after visiting his brothers funeral and was found unconscious on the plane from Dubai to Brisbane. They diverted the flight to Sri Lanka where they took him to hospital and conducted surgery on him for Acute Subdural Haemorrhaging.
He never took travel insurance under the belief that he was covered in the Netherlands but obviously overlooked the fact that he would not be covered by anyone in a situation like this. Something no one thinks will happen to them.
His two sons, Billy and Elliot, are in Sri Lanka trying to work out how he can get back to Australia as soon as possible which is, understandably, going to be an expensive and stressful ordeal. Quotes for an Air Ambulance are over $200,000 but we are hoping his condition gets better and we can get him on a commercial flight, escorted by medical professionals. This will also be a huge outlay but hopefully not as much as a charter flight.
He is still unconscious and we don't know what condition his brain will be in when/if he does wake up but we want to get him home as we know how lucky we are to have the Health Care we do in Australia compared to the public health system in Sri Lanka.
We know he is a loved person by so many people in so many parts of the world so we are hoping there is help out there as this is not something either of us are financially prepared for or able to afford on our own.
Thank you,
Billy and Elliot van Duuren
