So help me fight my friends x Love to you A HAPPY NEW YR TO u and family xxx Joanna Followers of women’s bodybuilding will probably remember me as a competing IFBB professional bodybuilder originating from the UK in the 00s. I achieved numerous competition successes, including a 1st in the 2001 Jan Tana Classic and competing twice in the Ms Olympia in 2001 and 2004 with 7th being my best position to date. The professional bodybuilding career is not always a long one, however I was lucky enough to compete at a high level for a decade. Building the body that I had took a huge amount of hard work and commitment. It was rewarding, but also punishing, both physically and mentally. In recent times I have been diagnosed with severe (early onset) Osteoarthritis which is principally affecting my knees. This has had a catastrophic impact on my mobility. The consultant said the bodybuilding was not the only reason for this happening and that it was just as much my genetics as the wear and tear in training and working life. The constant and excruciating pain means that on a bad day I am barely able to walk a few steps, meaning that I am practically trapped in my own home. This has had a knock-on effect on my mental health; ongoing anxiety disorder and depression make life even more difficult. These bad days are beginning to creep up while I wait for the first of several surgeries. My incapacity entitles me to some basic government benefits but these are simply not enough to cover the cost of the things that will make a difference and help me to improve my situation. Consequently I would like to appeal to the worldwide community of bodybuilding fans, followers, athletes and anyone with an interest to help me get my life back on track. There are two main matters that I am seeking to fund: 1. I am currently without a car, the previous vehicle having let me down after just three months. Having a working car – by which I mean a reliable second hand one – would make a huge difference to my mobility and enable me to more easily make hospital appointments, shop for myself and see more than these four walls. I am not able to really get anywhere but a few local shops. 2. I am awaiting a surgical procedure that will hopefully have a positive effect on my knees, but this being the UK I am on a lengthy waiting list before I undergo the operation. During this time I would like to take a range of dietary supplements that evidence suggests will help me to manage my pain. These supplements come at not inconsiderable cost and in order for them to take effect I need to persist in taking them over a substantial period of time. The funding target of this appeal breaks down roughly 80/20 in helping me to cover the above two costs. During my career, indeed throughout my life, I have been the kind of person who has always been happy and ready to help others when they needed it. Circumstances mean that now it is I who need that help, and so I appeal to you to make a contribution to this initiative. I know there are many people who do care about me still and I know many of you may struggle to help financially but if you can forward this on to others who may be able to help I would be extremely grateful. Achieving the target will mean the world to me. Thank you, Jo xxx
