Hi my name is Alan Dooley, I am Joannes husband. In January 2022 unfortunately Joanne was diagnosed with a condition called ankylosing spondylitis. Ankylosing Spondylitis is an inflammatory disease that, over time, can cause some of the bones in the spine to fuse. There is no cure for this condition but it can be treated. So far the treatment has been unsuccesful because Joannes condition has deteriorated in the last 6 months. Ultimately Joanne will end up permanently in a wheelchair and our current home is not wheelchair accesible. Joanne also suffers with rheumatoid arthritis and cerebral palsy.
Joanne is currently in Beaumont Lodge Transitional Care Unit and has been for the last 14 weeks. Joanne is desperate to return home to her usual surroundings so she can be with her husband, family and friends.
The aim of this fundraiser is to fund the works needed to be carried out to make our home wheelchair accesible. Joanne will not be discharged from Beaumont Lodge until our house is adpated for Joannes needs.
I am not in a position to fund these works by myself. At the moment we are entitled to a government grant which will cover up to €22,500 of the works needed to make our house accessible for Joanne. We have been quoted €55,000 to €57,500 to complete these works.
Essential works needed are as follows:
- Construction of a ramp access at front door.
- Installation of a through floor lift in the dining area and main bedroom.
- Renovation of existing bathroom and ensuite upstairs and amalgamate into one wheelchair accessible bathroom to include the following: Remove existing shower cubicle and bathtub and replace with a level access shower area Remove existing wash hand basins and replace with a wall mounted wash hand basin Remove existing toilets and replace with a tall height toilet. Remove floor tiles and replace with a flooring material that is non-slip with an anti-slip.
- Install grabrails at the toilet and in the shower.
- Installation of two wall mounted drop down grabrails at the toilet under the staircase.
- Replace the front door due to the 5’’ step-up and 1’’ door ledge.
