Lisa Cox was in a serious motorcycle accident on Saturday, February 20, 2021. Lisa is an avid Harley rider. She was safely cruising on her motorcycle in Melbourne, Fl. when a distracted driver ran a stop sign and pulled out in front of her. Lisa suffered life threatening injuries. She was wearing her helmet which saved her life. She suffered from head trauma, multiple facial fractures which has resulted in her jaw being wired shut for 6-8 weeks, a fractured sternum, 6 fractured ribs and multiple pelvic fractures. Her right leg was severely injured with her tibia and fibula broke at the ankle and just below the knee, her femur was shattered just above the knee. She has had 4 surgeries on so far, one to repair her facial fractures and 3 on her right leg. Lisa spent 16 days in ICU and is now in PCU, a step-down unit. Lisa was nasally intubated and is on a feeding tube because of her broken jaw. The surgeon put in a temporary trach so that they could get her off the ventilator. It is a day-to-day struggle for Lisa. She is in constant pain, has very painful coughing and choking issues due to the trach.
Lisa will need extensive rehab to learn to talk and eat again. She will be non-weight bearing on both legs for at least 6 months. She will need extensive highly specialized rehabilitation to learn to walk again. Lisa will require months and possibly years of rehabilitative therapy. She lives part time in Port St Lucie, Florida but her home is in Knoxville, TN. The family has already incurred many unexpected expenses related to the accident including travel cost to Florida and long-term hotels stays. Due to COVID, many resources typically available to families of trauma patients are not available which adds an additional hardship and out of pocket costs for the family.
Lisa can only be transported home by a medical air ambulance due to her condition. The cost to transport her home is $25,000. Her medical insurance will not cover the cost to transport her home. This is typical of most insurances. The doctors require her to be at an acute rehab facility. Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center in Knoxville is one of the best. Lisa will have months, possibly years of rehabilitation. Once Lisa completes her in-patient rehabilitation she will be released into the care of her sister, Beverly, and will live in her home in Knoxville. She will continue to need out-patient rehab and home health care. Lisa will not be able to care for herself or live alone for at least a year.
Lisa has a big heart and all that know her say she's one of the most compassionate selfless people they know. Lisa has been a caregiver herself for years. She loves people and she loves caring for them. Her clients always become part of her family. Lisa met many of the people she cares for while volunteering at local senior centers. Lisa volunteered for years at the Humane Society of Port St Lucie/Fort Pierce. She is an active member of Christ Fellowship Church and a volunteer of the Dream Team. She does animal rescue and fostering.
If you know Lisa, you know she would be the first person to jump in and help anyone. Please show your love and support by donating generously to help Lisa get home so she can receive the care, family support and rehabilitation she needs.
We also ask you to please pray for Lisa's continued recovery. Lisa's faith is strong and she knows the Lord is with her every step of this journey.
Thank you to everyone for all of the kindness, encouraging notes and support.
With much love and gratitude,
