People for Peace and Security (“PPS”), a progressive grassroots community group, seeks funds to support its ongoing local organizing efforts aimed at canceling the basing of the F-35 fighter jet at the joint civilian/military-use Burlington International Airport. Our work builds on the last decade of determined local opposition to the F-35 basing including educating the public, agitating in the halls of power, and creating change at the local level. Join us in our efforts and help us be the change we wish to see in our region and our world.
PPS arises from a long history of local opposition to the basing of the Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jets at the Vermont Air National Guard’s base located at our local airport. Throughout the last decade, our community has spoken again and again to demand an end to war, an end to high level military installations located in densely populated civilian communities, and an end to the damaging noise impacts produced by this aircraft on children, workers, the elderly and indeed, all local residents.
We stand opposed to the environmental classism and racism implicit in this basing. We stand opposed to the demolition of affordable homes located in the most dangerous noise zones. We stand opposed to some of our most vulnerable neighbors being forced to live under conditions that no elected official would and in homes in which the U.S. Air Force itself has termed as “unsuitable for residential use”. Moreover, because the F-35 aircraft can be retrofitted to carry so-called "low yield” nuclear bombs (and because the entire F-35 fleet features prominently in our nation’s Nuclear Triad) and because the cities of Burlington, South Burlington and Winooski, along with the Vermont State Senate, all have passed resolutions banning the basing of nuclear capable weapons delivery systems in our region, we likewise stand opposed to this basing. Moreover, voters in the City of Burlington also passed a non-binding resolution opposing the local basing of this aircraft which was subsequently cast aside by our current mayor, Miro Weinberger, who continues to refuse to work on behalf of the will of the voters. Therefore, PPS stands in solidarity with the tens of thousands of people in our area who want this basing canceled.
We are very grateful for donations and volunteer support from our community. Funds raised will be used to provide resources for PPS to continue to organize in our community. Our initial goal of $12,000 will be used initially to hire a film/video team for our media efforts. The funds will be used for supplies and materials as well as for equitable payment for services. Funds will be used to compensate front line organizers and interviewees from marginalized communities. Depending upon the quantity raised, People for Peace and Security will make a decision about hiring an organizer or creating more documentary footage to highlight our efforts.
