Help Get This Kansas City Actress to CalArts!

Hello!

My name is Lucy and I am raising my tuition for the California Institute of the Arts!

Growing up in Kansas City means that I have been raised by its wholistic and diverse arts community. I have witnessed the importance of art accessibility through the constantly rotating exhibits and events at the Kemper and the Nelson Atkins Museum, to the innovative projects displayed monthly at First Fridays. On top of this, the world-premiers brought to Kansas City by The Unicorn Theater, The KC Rep, and The Living Room have excited my insight to the constantly developing world of theater. I have seen art shape and develop my community, and now I feel it is my duty to do the same to our global community by pursuing an education in Performance Art.

California Institute of the Arts is the place for me to make this happen!

Founded by local visionary Walt Disney, CalArts strives to keep the experience of art ever-changing with the world around it, while also giving its artists the agency to make this happen. The program is bolstered by its community of alumni, which includes Cecily Strong, Tim Burton, and KC native Don Cheadle. CalArts alumni have also become the backbone of Pixar Animation Studios, which is just one of the many worldwide connections the program offers. The faculty are all active members of their artistic field, which means that I will learn how to create and support my own work and how to immerse myself in projects that will propel me into the sights of a community. On top of that, their structure for collaboration mirrors the techniques that I have learned and exercised  during my six years of training with HASF's Team Shakespeare.

I love my city and I believe that getting this education and strengthening my roots in the global field are the best ways for me to give back to this amazing place.

See me perform

This summer I am in a Fringe Festival production at The Unicorn Theater. To learn about the show and get tickets, visit:

About me

I’ve been performing Shakespeare's works since I was 8 years old. After doing the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival's summer camps for 4 years I joined the Festival's apprentice acting troop, Team Shakespeare. It was in this group where I developed my base as an actor through creative writing, devised group work, and character and movement training. One of my favorite performance opportunities with Team that you may have seen was the improvised pre-show parody the Shakespeare Festival.

I also participated in Team Shakespeare, the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival’s apprentice acting troop. One of my favorite performance opportunities with Team that you may have seen was the improvised pre-show parody the Shakespeare Festival.

I graduated in May of 2018 from Lincoln College Prep with my International Baccalaureate diploma, and I decided to take a gap year to explore what I wanted to do with my future. In this year I auditioned at Juilliard, Tisch, and CalArts, where I discovered my true dedication to theater arts. I also took the stage as Isabella in Measure for Measure at Summit Theater group, Rachel Brown in Inherit the Wind at The White Theater, and played a role in each of the Terra Femina Collective's inaugural productions.

I am so proud of what I have been able to accomplish in this time and I can't wait to see what I can do in a whole lifetime!

About the Program

CalArts offers a four-year program to earn a BFA in Theater Performance. The program accepts a class of approximately 40 students each year, which are then split into smaller concentrated groups of 13-14 for core classes. Although the curriculum is structured like a conservatory program, they are an academic institution with General Education requirements. Unlike universities, however, these classes are worked into the curriculum so that it is all centered around each specific major.

I will be in class about 10 hours a day, followed by 4 hours of rehearsal, and have 6 hour rehearsals on the weekends. The course will be rigorous and the curriculum will be difficult, and that is what excites me! I feel that my time and effort will be best utilized in a program that matches my commitment to the arts.
