Saving Lucy

Donation protected
This is Lucy. On June 28th I responded to a post on social media about a dog that was lying in a ditch and badly injured. When I got there, she was unable to move and had several lacerations, open wounds and was clearly in immense pain. With the assistance of a few people that stopped to help we got her into my car. Close to midnight, I drove to her to an emergency hospital an hour away.

Due to the extent of her hip fractures, the hospital told me that euthanasia was the best option because finding a surgeon would be difficult, very expensive, and she may not even recover. I couldn't accept this, because Lucy was coherent, engaged and looked at me with such loving eyes that said she knew she would get through this.

Instead of euthanasia I chose to have her wounds stitched up, took her home, and began to look for a surgeon. After getting multiple estimates, I decided on a doctor at Overland Park Emergency Veterinary and Specialty in Overland Park, Kansas. She could do the surgery on Friday, July 5th, one week from Lucy’s accident.

The doctor could see the damage was extensive after more x-rays under sedation. She said she may need to operate on both the left and right hips but wouldn't know until she started the surgery. The doctor ultimately chose to operate on the right hip, and leave the left side alone, to see how Lucy recovers over the next few days. She is staying in the hospital for monitoring and therapeutic care. Her tentative release date is July 9th.

The current cost of Lucy’s medical care is $6,900. So far she moving forward in her recovery however, there is a possibility she will need one or two additional surgeries and it is too early tell at this point. A second surgery was estimated at an additional $3,500.

Your positive thoughts and prayers are so appreciated, and I am grateful for any donation amount you can give to support Lucy and her medical needs. 100% of donations go directly to her care.

Thank you for caring about her and believing in her recovery. My hope is that she can be an example of the blessing that a dog is regardless of age, breed or injury. I hope that she will help more people to understand that joy is found not in the type of dog we get, but in any dog we choose to love and give a second chance to. Even with all Lucy has been through, she still has a smile on her face, love in her heart and a will to go on. There are so many more animals out there like her. They just need someone to believe in them, to go the distance with them, and to see them for the treasure they are.

Please join the journey and help Lucy get back on her feet again, and please, if you find your own Lucy in need somewhere, join their journey, too.

If you prefer to donate directly to the hospital, Lucy is at Overland Park Emergency Veterinary and Specialty in Overland Park, Kansas. Thank you for your support!
