PPEforHCPs Toronto: Protect our Healthcare Workers

Donation protected
The COVID-19 pandemic has been placing increasing strain on the healthcare system, stretching our resources thinner and thinner. In Toronto, many of our frontline healthcare professionals, such as physicians and nurses, do not have adequate access to personal protective equipment (PPE), such as face masks, gowns, gloves, and N95 respirators. The current shortage of PPE is placing our healthcare providers at a greater risk of contracting COVID-19 and spreading it amongst themselves and to patients.

This fundraiser is an initiative started by a group of Canadian medical students after hearing about the difficulties currently being faced by our colleagues on the frontlines in accessing PPE. We are aiming to fundraise money towards supplying healthcare providers in Toronto with vital PPE so that they can continue to provide quality care to our community and save lives without putting their own in danger. The wellbeing and protection of our health care workers is crucial to the continued performance of our healthcare system as a whole.

The current PPE crisis is due to a shortage of supplies rather than a shortage of funds. The government is funneling money into PPE manufacturing, but there is a significant delay in production from major manufacturers. Our healthcare workers are in immediate need of PPE. To address this issue, we have joined forces with a national fundraiser led by a resident physician at McMaster University (Dr. Christopher Griffiths) and his sister, the CEO of KnixWear (Joanna Griffiths), who have a long-standing business relationship with a non-hospital CDC-certified PPE supplier. By doing this, we are able to distribute PPE resources into hospitals through an avenue that institutions would not otherwise be able to access. We are fundraising as the Toronto branch of this parent fundraiser to acquire a portion of the bulk PPE purchase. The funds will be transferred to Dr. Griffiths, who will put in the order for PPE supplies.

Here are some rough estimates of how far your donations will go:

$10 - 4 x N95 mask
$20 - 8 x N95 maks
$50 - 100 surgical masks
$100 - 500 pairs of surgical gloves
$250 - One doctor or nurse kit (estimated gloves, masks and gowns needed for one hospital nurse or doctor for 7 days)

With your financial support, we will be able to provide PPE for healthcare professionals to keep them safe as they work on the frontlines of this crisis. The supplies will be distributed to hospitals and healthcare facilities in Toronto in greatest need.

Any donations will go a long way!
