CELEBRATING JUSTIN FASHANU
A message from Stephen Fry
Justin Fashanu Statue Campaign Website Justin was the first pro footballer to come out as gay.
We are raising money to create an enduring tribute for Justin Fashanu on the approach to Norwich’s Carrow Road ground.
In a time of intense discrimination and violence towards the LBGTQ+ community around the world, it is crucial, now more than ever, to highlight resilience, strength, and courage. By creating a space to honor Justin Fashanu we are shining a light on an individual who first broke the glass ceiling in football, a ceiling which has been sadly repaired.
We are raising funds to pay for the installation, garden, and related costs to ensure that this memorial is beautifully crafted to represent the beacon of hope and progress that Justin was in life.
A Local Project with Global Meaning
Justin's place will be in Norwich, England but this is a global campaign bringing together people against homophobia in football from around the world.
Donate in any currency you wish - any amount - when donating, you will just need to select the amount you would like to donate in British £ pounds, you will then be charged the equivalent to that amount in your own currency.
Why is a tribute to Justin Important?
When a gay or bisexual kid sees nobody like them in the ranks of professional footballers how can they ever picture themselves fulfilling their dream? Young footballers learn early to hide or give up. Homophobic ‘banter’ in the dressing room, vicious chants on the terraces, and coaches telling them to lay low and not bring attention to their sexuality.
If footballers reflected all 16 to 35 year-old men in Britain we would see at least 167 out gay or bisexual players in the four professional leagues of England and Wales. That’s two same-sex loving men in every side. We would have 36 in the premiership alone.
And there would be 58 out players in the FIFA World Cup in Qatar (but of course they wouldn’t be allowed to play in Qatar).
Where are those hundreds of footballers?
