Cataract Surgeries

Donation protected
Dear friends,

Thank you very much for celebrating my birthday with me throughout the month of MAY!!!

This year, with your help, we can celebrate together
by raising funds to pay for cataract surgeries in the Volta region of Ghana. One may ask, why the interest in cataracts?

Some of the benefits of visual restoration include parents being able to work and provide for the families, children going back to school, and increasing in the literacy rate.

The interest started exactly ten years ago this month (May 2008) in Philadelphia. The semester was about ending and I wanted to travel abroad on a volunteer mission. I researched on goggle for possible volunteer activities abroad. Luckily, I found Unite for Sight which operates mainly in Ghana, India and Honduras. I read the peculiarities of each country and finally settled on Ghana, my home country. The application process was tedious and the requirements were beyond my strength, but I persevered because I was focused on the outcome instead of the process. Within a month, I was in Ghana, together with other volunteers from the USA. The experience was life changing.

We (the volunteers) traveled to some remote villages in the Ashanti region where we organized free eye screening for the residents. The people came in large numbers and received treatments based on their prevailing conditions such as conjunctivitis, myopia, presbyopia glaucoma, pterygium, and cataracts. People with cataracts, pterygium and glaucoma were sent to Kumasi, the capital city, for medical management and for surgical interventions.

Cataracts is a curable eye condition. The surgery takes roughly 25-30 minutes and patients are able to see by the next day!!! During my volunteer period, we screened so many people and about 200 people with cataracts were able to undergo surgery for visual restoration FOR FREE. The cost of each surgery was ONLY $50!

Some of the benefits of visual restoration include parents being able to work and provide for the families, children going back to school, and increasing in the literacy rate. All of these lead to the promotion of the national development goals which constituent some of the sustainable development goals set by the United Nations.

Now, you understand why I choose to celebrate my birthday this way :-)
Please, join me in helping others. We can do it!!!
No amount is to big or too small.
Thank you so much for your contribution.
