Clean Water for Adukrom-Axim, Ghana
Donation protected
ORGANIZED BY BUTTE, MONTANA COMMUNITY
Adukrom is a rural town in the Nzema East municipality of the Western Region in Ghana- West Africa. The town is about 35km from the municipal capital Axim with farming as the major occupation. According to the 2010 population housing census report, the population of Adukrom stood at 578 persons with a slight
female dominance of 297 over the 275 males. The projected population as of 2019 is 757.
Adukrom can only boast of a primary school and a community shed as their only infrastructure. The community is faced with challenges such as unemployment,
inadequate access to clean water, no health center or toilet facilities. Access to clean water is the most pressing need of this community and needs to be addressed.
The current well is the only source of water for the entire community for domestic, farming and commercial purposes. Because the well is old and has partially collapsed, it is exposed to rainy season run-off and sewage contamination. Villagers utilize buckets for obtaining water. These same buckets are used for many other purposes and are often not clean. Due to collapse of the well and its relative isolation, community members, especially children, sometimes drown when fetching water.
According to statistics from the Axim Government Hospital, 200 incidences of water related diseases were recorded for Adukrom villagers between 2013 and 2018. Lack of clean water and poor sanitation contribute to 70% of the common diseases in Ghana. Children less than 5 years are the most vulnerable. These
children are dying each year from diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, and typhoid.
Safe water is life! Our aim is to raise $8000 for the construction of two mechanized borehole wells for the people of Adukrom.
Thank you for being a part of this noble cause.
