Help Giada Cover Legal Costs

My name is Giada and I live in Des Moines, Iowa. I am an active member of my community and organizer for racial, environmental, and economic justice. I am needing to pay legal fees relating to the damage of police vehicles.

Let's be clear- I got in trouble for something the cops do on a regular basis without punishment. Cops regularly harass, assault, and even kill people and are protected by qualified immunity. Rarely do they have to take accountability for their actions, instead it is us, the taxpayers, who bear the burden of paying for massive settlements to survivors and victims of police violence.

I keyed some cop cars. Minor damage. The cars are still fully operational. What I did was not a violent act. Property damage is not violence. The police are always violent. I am one person with limited resources. The police are the largest beneficiary of public taxpayer dollars in cities nationwide. That is the difference.

Three of the damaged cars belonging to the Story County Sheriff's Dept are not being repaired. These cars will instead be sold at public auction. However, the Sheriff’s Dept claims that they still should receive compensation for the damage done to these cars. The judge ruled in favor of the county. This is an additional $10,000 that they will get to pocket along with the auction revenue.

I do not regret my actions. I stand by what I did. I also cannot afford to cover these costs, which is why I am turning to my community for help.
