On Wednesday March 16th 2022, the Rasmussens received a diagnosis of Ewing Sarcoma Bone cancer for their youngest 13 year old daughter, Giliya Shoshanna who turns fourteen years old in a couple of weeks.
On Wednesday March 16th 2022, the Rasmussens received a diagnosis of Ewing Sarcoma Bone cancer for their youngest 13 year old daughter, Giliya Shoshanna who turns fourteen years old in a couple of weeks.
This type of bone cancer is a form of childhood cancer requiring Giliya to undergo intensive and lengthy treatment, including intensive chemotherapy and multiple surgeries to ensure local control.
As Giliya progresses through treatment, she is likely to experience a series of side effects: nausea, vomiting, alopecia/hair loss, increased risk of infection due to suppressed immune system functioning, weakness, fatigue and muscle deterioration requiring support with daily activities such as showering, walking and dressing. These effects are expected to worsen as Giliya's treatment intensifies.
Although her length of treatment will depend on her response to it and recovery periods, it is expected to span over at least the next 9 to 12 months. This will be administered both inpatient and outpatient at Queensland Children’s Hospital.
Like every parent would do without hesitation, Nola (her Mama) has taken an extended leave without pay for this term to ensure that she can care full time for Giliya. Keith (her father) has a week and a half left of sick leave and annual leave would like to stop work to be at home with Giliya having a low immune system and not wanting to put her at risk.
It is unknown how long this treatment will be at this stage, however the family are taking one day at a time, one treatment at a time. This GO FUND ME effort is to give them absolute focus on being there for Giliya every step of the way, without the added pressures that come financially.
