Gino's Journey

This is Gino, the two year-old son of Nicole Foraker and Aaron Hinnershitz. This past June, Gino was diagnosed with a rare genetic metabolic disorder called Sanfilippo syndrome, Type A. Sanfilippo syndrome is a progressive disease that is 100% fatal with no FDA-approved treatment or cure. It is often called children’s Alzheimer's, and the diagnosis is devastating.

Children diagnosed with Sanfilippo syndrome lack a necessary enzyme used to break down sugars in the body. Because Gino is missing this single enzyme, toxic cellular waste material is building up and damaging his brain every second. As the disease progresses, Gino will gradually lose his ability to walk, talk, and feed himself. He will experience significant physical and cognitive decline, including movement disorders, seizures, and severe dementia. Ultimately, this devastating illness will claim his life.

Gino is the sweetest boy with the most contagious smile. He loves spending time with family, especially his big brother Luca. Whether it's enjoying Sunday dinners, taking leisurely walks, or singing along to his favorite songs, Gino's joy is infectious. Nicole and Aaron are dedicated to cherishing these moments and creating lasting memories with their precious son.
