Rebecca Researches Giraffes

Picture your favorite animal... Maybe it's a tiger. Maybe it's an elephant. Now...picture a world where that animal no longer exists. Heartbreaking, right? Well, that could potentially happen to MY favorite animal, the giraffe.

Giraffes and their conservation have been my biggest passion (besides my family, of course) for a very long time. I fall in love with them more every day as I teach people about their beauty and challenges as a tour guide at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

But giraffes are in trouble. Their populations in Africa have dropped alarmingly in the past several years, largely without notice...a"silent extinction." Habitat loss, hunting, and competition with farmers for land have threatened countless giraffes and their homelands.

Now I have the opportunity of a lifetime: to go to Namibia and see my beautiful friends in person. This isn't your regular tourist safari though...if this was purely for leisure, I'd wait and fund that myself. No, I have a chance to spend two weeks in the Namib desert, as part of a conservation team, tracking and observing wild giraffes so more can be done in the future to save this incredible animal.

The research trip is organized by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, a not-for-profit group based in Namibia whose mission is to create "a sustainable future for all giraffe populations in the wild." You can visit their website at giraffeconservation.org.

The cost of the two weeks of field work is $1500...this covers equipment, supplies, land use fees, and all other monies necessary for the research itself. The GCF asks participants to provide their own airfare and accommodations in Windhoek (Namibia's capital) at the beginning and end of the trip. That's where I anticipate the remaining $2000 will need to go. If I raise more than what is required for the airfare, Windhoek accommodations, and actual research, every remaining dime will be split between the GCF and the Safari Park so both organizations can continue their respective work for this remarkable species.

The trip is at the end of April of next year, but I need to submit the required $1500 immediately.

Remember that world without your favorite animal? If you choose to contribute, just remember that what you are really funding is a future FULL of giraffes (and a girl's heart's desire to see them in their wild home). I greatly and truly appreciate your consideration and generosity.
