On July 15, 2021, Garrett was diagnosed with Parkinson's. On July 27, 2022, that diagnosis became Parkinson's with mild cognitive impairment leading to Dementia with Lewy Bodies. Things then progressed quickly. On September 1, 2022, Garrett was moved into a memory care center due to his dementia and severe impulse control disorder. As you might imagine, this has been extremely difficult on Amy and the girls but necessary as it was impossible to care for his challenging needs at home.
A substantial financial challenge comes along with the emotional challenge of having Garrett live in a care home. Unlike most residents, Garrett is still young and strong. The care home costs $14,000 a month. In addition to this monthly cost come many additional fees. Lately, Garrett has needed a 1:1 caregiver due to agitation and wanting to leave the facility. 1:1 care is an additional $1,000 a day. Amid it all, Amy still has their ongoing monthly expenses at home. Garrett's salary is currently covered through disability insurance, but that will only last another five months. While they are receiving some financial help from family, this GoFundMe is set up to help with the many extra monthly expenses they continue to incur. $100,000 is a huge but very necessary goal. For now, we’re endeavoring to raise 6 months of the current costs, praying that 1:1 care will not always be needed and expenses will diminish over time.
The Girards are fortunate enough to have built a large caring community. They have served and loved others over the years. Now we have the opportunity for their community to give back to such a wonderful family we love so much. If you want more details about Garrett’s current situation and how you can visit and support them, see Amy’s journal on Caring Bridge.
