Help Girls Education Mission International raise $7500 to provide girls with mentors and the opportunity to complete their education.
Girls Education Mission International (GEM) is an award-winning organization that focuses on girls’ education and women’s empowerment. GEM aims to provide girls with the resources, tools, and experiences they need to reach their full potential. To do so, GEM sponsors programs focused on mentorship, capacity building, entrepreneurial development, and advocacy. GEM trains teachers and administrators to enhance the quality of education. Over 120 girls have already participated in GEM’s programs, and 450 teachers and administrators total have been trained on educational programming. In addition, GEM also donates supplies like menstrual health products and instructional materials to school, enabling girls to overcome common barriers which discourage them from attending school.
According to UNICEF, 18.5 million children are out of school in Nigeria, and nearly 60 percent of these children are girls. Several factors contribute to the devaluation of girls’ education, including issues like poverty and gender discrimination. A shortage of schools, a lack of qualified teachers, and the costs associated with education (money for books, uniforms, and school supplies), prevent girls from finishing their education. Additionally, many families are also fearful to send their girls to school due to high rates of kidnapping and persistent attacks on girls.
To address these problems, GEM will design, implement, and evaluate a new life skills and leadership project called “I Am Possible.” The project will focus on girls between the ages of 10 and 19 in the Plateau State of Northern Nigeria. Its goals are to increase graduation rates among vulnerable girls and promote social change within communities. Through a combination of seminars and small group tutorials, 50 girls will be recruited and trained as “Girl Peer Mentors and Advocates.” These girls will then work with their peers in small groups of 10-20 to deliver the “I Am Possible” curriculum in their respective schools and communities. GEM also will launch the “#IAmPossible” campaign in collaboration with these girl leaders. Girls will advocate for education opportunities by sharing their knowledge with their parents and teachers as well as religious and traditional leaders in the community. In addition to the educational component of the project, GEM will provide girls from low-income families with funding for supplies that are often out of reach like uniforms, backpacks, and menstrual health products. In the long term, GEM hopes to expand the project beyond the Plateau State and into other states in Northern Nigeria.
Through mentorship, girls will learn about the importance of continuing their education and will develop skills to become agents of change in their communities through advocacy. In turn, these girls serve as examples for younger generations of girls, creating a ripple effect and long-lasting impact. Help us promote girls’ education, empowerment, and leadership by donating to this campaign and sharing it with others!
