Support the Girls Livelihood and Mentorship Initiative (GLAMI) in bringing Binti Shupavu, an UNESCO award-winning mentoring program, to more girls in Tanzania.
The Girls Livelihood and Mentorship Initiative (GLAMI) provides mentoring programs in Tanzania to support girls in completing their education, developing into confident leaders, and transforming their communities. GLAMI equips girls with skills to overcome challenges and reach their full potential, understanding that educated girls can create lasting, positive change. When girls are educated, they are able to secure better jobs, raise healthier families, and uplift the status of women within society overall.
GLAMI’s main program is called Binti Shupavu (“Courageous Daughters” in Swahili).
It was created after evaluating a needs-assessment which identified key barriers preventing girls from completing secondary school in the communities GLAMI serves. As an evidence-based program with a strong history, Binti Shupavu has had a profound impact on girls, their families, and communities in Tanzania. The program is tailored to specifically address key challenges that lead to tens of thousands of Tanzanian girls dropping out of secondary school every year. It focuses on girls between the ages of 12 and 18 and is delivered throughout the first four years of secondary school. The program teaches girls about effective study skills, personal leadership, health, and self-confidence with the goal of increasing graduation rates among participants.
The main component of the program focuses on mentorship and pairs girls with university-educated Tanzanian women who have overcome many of the challenges the young girls are facing. The mentors deliver the program’s curriculum weekly and foster connections with the young girls. The program also aims to build connections among the program participants so that girls have a support system among their peers to offer support to one another as they progress. Additionally, the program also employs full time social workers who provide extra support to the most vulnerable scholars and intervene as third party support to help girls facing extreme challenges.
Over 3,600 girls have graduated from Binti Shupavu since the program piloted in 2017, and the program currently serves over 6,000 participants across three regions in Tanzania. Evaluations of the program have consistently shown impressive outcomes. The 2022 Impact report showed that 98% of Binti Scholars graduated from lower secondary school— that’s 8% better than peers who are not enrolled in the program. Binti Scholars were also 20% more resilient after completing the program when compared to baseline data collected at the start of the program. Additionally, Binti Alumni who are now in the workforce earn an average of $30,500/year USD, a figure significantly higher than the national average.
The funding provided by this campaign will help expand the Binti Shupavu program in the Morogoro region, which is among the three regions in Tanzania with the highest percentage of dropout rates for girls. The program will specifically focus on the rural district of Morogoro, partnering with 9 schools and covering more than 30 villages.
It is estimated that 850 girls will directly benefit from this project, but the program’s reach will extend beyond those who are direct participants. Girls who take part in Binti Shupavu rarely keep what they have learned to themselves, relaying lesson topics and discussions to friends and family alike. Parents and even community leaders outside the families see the changes in Binti girls and often begin challenging their own assumptions about the roles and capabilities of girls and women. Based on previous experience with its programs, GLAMI estimates that an additional 1,700 girls will indirectly benefit as well as 1,520 members of the community, which includes parents, teachers, boys within the schools and villages, and local government leaders.
Please support our campaign to bring Binti Shupavu to more girls in Tanzania and share it with other champions of girls’ education. With your help, we can enroll even more girls in this life-changing program.
