We are the River City Science Academy Mandarin Model United Nations team! We are a group of eight seventh and eighth graders that are working together with our coach to become more civically minded and learn how our world’s nations work together!
Model United Nations is an authentic simulation of the UN General Assembly. This means that middle school students come together to reenact the scenarios in which real-world leaders try to solve issues that plague societies across the world. Throughout the process, we learn diplomacy, negotiation, and decision-making skills that help us become the future leaders of our country and our world. We also learn research, public speaking, and critical thinking skills to help us in and out of the classroom.
At a conference, students step into the shoes of ambassadors to represent countries other than their own. Students spend considerable time researching the country in order to become well-versed in its norms and socio-political beliefs in reference to the issue that they are trying to resolve. Students learn empathy through this process that opens their eyes to human rights challenges such as: pandemic illness, gender equality, and weapons of mass destruction.
Our goal this year, is to attend three conferences—each of which requires travel and intensive preparation in order to intelligibly collaborate with others to find sustainable solutions for these world issues. One of them—the one we’re most excited about—is held in New York City—and draws over 2,500 students from around the world! We’ve got the preparations part covered, but we need YOU to “Give $10 for Model UN” so that we can afford to make our dream come true and eventually make the world a better place by becoming informed citizens of an ever-changing society.
