My friend and colleague, Melanie Dawson, is in serious need of help. Last year she had work done on her knee to fix old softball injuries. Three weeks ago, the screw that was inserted came out and infected her bone. She is on intravenous antibiotics and can’t work at the job she loves. Unfortunately, Mel is the poster child of what’s wrong with health care in America. Hard working and good people left out of the system. She will be out of work for at least a month and a half (after not working in the summer). Bottom line is she is having trouble paying her bills and is in danger of losing everything. Today, I had to argue with her to let me set this site up. She did not want to be dependent on anyone. To that I called BS! Many have been dependent on her over the years (including me) and now it is time for us to have her back.
Mel is the site lead for the Arcata Elementary After School Program. She is a kind and compassionate soul who is beloved by the students, staff, and families. Her Banditz drum band has touched many kids, many of whom would not have had the opportunity to play otherwise. She is the person who has changed many lives for the better with her kind words and encouragement.
Mel needs these funds to help pay for on-going living expenses since she is unable to work during her rehabilitation. She also needs funds to pay her significant medical costs.
While I have never witnessed this, it is my understanding that she plays a decent game of softball. Over the years I have known this amazing woman, she has touched many folks with her hard work, dedication, and devotion to the children, friends, and families she so happily serves. She never asks for favors but continues to give back to her community. My friends it is time to step up to the plate! We need to hit a home run for this deserving soul that has touched so many people in such a positive way.
