My name is Jamie and I am creating this fundraiser for my best friend of 25 years. She has acquired a horrific debilitating disease that has no cure and very few treatment options. The disease is Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). It is the most painful disease known to man, it is called the Suicide disease. Because for most, death is preferable to the constant all day pain that eats away at them.
Most people get it in one of their limbs. My dear friend has it all over her body. She writhes in pain daily. I have spent countless hours on the phone with her while she sobs in pain. There is no comfort. There is no escaping the pain. This has put a terrible stress on her husband, who can only watch helplessly as his wife cries out. Her children are greatly effected by seeing her in pain every single moment of the day.
She has a 16 year old son and 10 year old triplets. She used to be a busy stay at home mom who homeschooled her children through a charter because all 4 have extreme learning disabilities. She dedicated herself to making sure they got to their occupational and speech therapies and received first rate education. Her whole life was raising her children and accommodating their learning needs while her husband worked 2 jobs to make it all possible. She was an avid gardener. A gourmet cook. She is still a sweet kind soul even through the fire of all this pain. But her life has all but ended due to this horrific painful illness.
She describes the pain in her own words:
Every day is waking up to a nightmare of unbearable pain. I can't imagine living another 20 years in this body. I pray for cancer or something to kill me daily. The thought of dying is a relief. It's like my skin is on fire all over my body. My head is so inflamed that the pressure pushes down on my teeth. I take the strongest anti inflammatory daily that threatens to destroy my kidneys but ruined kidneys is nothing compared to the NEVER ENDING Pressure in my head. It's not a headache, its my scalp swelling and the pressure is unbearable. I have developed a blood clot on my brain because of the trauma that has been caused to my body. The nerve pain doesn't stop with my body on fire. It pulls in the center of my body so that it feels like it's ripping in two. Without the possibility of getting these treatments the disease will progress. It eventually wastes away muscle and bone and my body will contort until I die.
This disease is so rare there are very few treatment options that are covered by insurance. And what is covered is not effective in reducing pain long term (opiates, lidocaine, TMS, etc.) There is no cure but there is hope for it to go in remission! Ketamine will help her in the short term and long term.
We are raising money for 2 different treatments of Ketamine. The first immediate short term treatment is Ketamine infusion therapy. They are $500 each and she needs 10 of them. This will total $5000. Melinda has found a local pain management clinic that offers these. She is starting them immediately. The second long term solution that will put her CRPS in total remission is a 10 day medically induced coma with a continuous Ketamine drip. This will reset her parasympathetic nervous system. This second treatment is done at a clinic in Florida but much more expensive, around $20,000. But has shown much success in helping CRPS patients put this disease into total remission.
It is our hope that we can raise enough money to fly Melinda and her husband to Florida and pay for all these treatments. It sounds impossible. But then I see hundreds of thousands of dollars being raised for all sorts of things. When my friend, who is closer than a sister is in this much pain, all I can do is hope. I believe in miracles!
The money raised will pay for airfare to Florida for she and her husband Danny. It will cover the all the treatments both short term and long term. It will cover hotel stays, car rental, food and also help to pay their rent while Danny is having to take ample time off work to accompany his wife. This is a desperate situation, but one that can be fixed with money, thank God!
So please give. Please give Melinda her life back. Give Danny his wife back, give her kids their mom back. Even if its 5 bucks. Donate a Starbuck's drink to this cause.
