Help Mohamed Ali Walk Again: A Life-Changing Surgery Amidst Crisis
Imagine losing not only your mobility but also your home and youth to war and tragedy. I am writing to raise money for my first cousin (father's sister's son), Mohamed Ali, a resilient 28-year-old Sudanese young adult currently trapped in war-torn Sudan with debilitating injuries. A devastating motorcycle accident shattered his femur in 2021, leaving him disabled and reliant on walkers and others for basic mobility and activities of daily living. A subsequent surgery in Khartoum’s limited healthcare system only worsened his condition, as his bones didn’t heal correctly. The conflict is escalating rapidly with no end in sight. He is unable to live independently and struggling daily in Sudan, where conflict and crisis have only deepened his challenges. (AS OF NOW, HE IS STUCK IN ARBAGI, AL-GEZIRA SUDAN UNTIL THERE IS A SAFE WAY TO EXIT AS THE ROADS ARE CURRENTLY BLOCKED OFF BY REBELS***)
Who I Am
My name is Azzah, and I am raising funds on behalf of my cousin, Mohamed, who has endured more than most of us can imagine. Just three years ago, he was working to build a brighter future in Sudan. Then came the accident that took his ability to walk, and soon after, the escalating conflict in Sudan forced him from his home in Khartoum to Wad Medani- to Arbagi and back leaving him particularly vulnerable. Mohamed's physical limitations have left him even more isolated amidst the ongoing humanitarian crisis, where healthcare resources are scarce.
Current Crisis
Sudan’s humanitarian crisis has only worsened since April 2023, displacing over 4.8 million people and leaving 24.7 million in dire need of humanitarian assistance. Inflation has skyrocketed, and basic resources, including medical care, are nearly nonexistent. People with disabilities, like Mohamed, face additional hardships as hospitals are closed or destroyed, and specialized care is almost impossible to find.
Our Hope
Our family’s only hope now is to get Mohamed to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where a compassionate doctor is on standby, prepared to perform the critical surgery on his femur at no cost. However, the journey to Jeddah—covering travel, visa fees, housing, and post-surgery rehabilitation—requires funds far beyond what our refugee family can manage.
Funding Goal and Allocation
To bring Mohamed to Jeddah and give him the chance to walk again, we aim to raise $20,000. Here’s how these funds will be used:
- Visa and Passport Renewal – Ensuring legal passage for Mohamed to leave Sudan.
- Travel Expenses – Round-trip airfare for Mohamed and his wife, plus necessary transfers.
- Temporary Housing – Rental of a small modest apartment in Jeddah during surgery and recovery.
- Post-Surgery Rehabilitation – Including physiotherapy sessions to aid his recovery.
- Aide and Daily Care – Support for his daily needs during rehabilitation.
- Mental Health Services – Intensive therapy to help him cope with trauma.
Transparency and Accountability
To ensure full transparency, I will manage donations directly and transfer funds using the Bankak app to Mohamed’s account in Sudan (Sudan's national banking app which is still running in some areas https://bankofkhartoum.com/sudan/mobile-banking-mbok/). I am committed to regular updates, sharing photos, videos, and receipts of major expenses, as well as progress updates on his surgery and rehabilitation. Every dollar will go directly toward helping Mohamed regain his mobility and independence. I will post receipts of tickets, on-going medical costs, etc.
Your Impact
Your support represents more than financial aid; it’s a lifeline of hope and resilience for Mohamed. Together, we can help him walk again, reclaim his life, and overcome the overwhelming challenges of the current crisis. Thank you for reading, and thank you for any support you can offer. Let’s bring Mohamed closer to this life-changing opportunity in Jeddah, giving him a chance at a dignified, independent life.
