Sumi Das has been on the forefront of Trans leadership. Running a shelter in the state of West Bengal for Trans and Gender Variant and Intersex homeless folks, she has relentlessly worked to ensure there is food and rations to the communities.
Sumi Das is an activist who has been working for the rights of trans and gender-diverse people in North Bengal and India for more than twelve years now. She is the founder of Moitrisanjog Society, the only organization that works for the labor rights of kothi, hijra
and transgender groups in North Bengal. And one of the only four shelters in India that allow TGNC intakes. In that capacity, she has been working for the human rights, social acceptance and economic empowerment of her community in Coochbehar since 2009. She has led her collective in producing a film, Alpo Jana Galpagulo or The Lesser Known Stories, about this journey. As a Bahujan person from an oppressed caste background, Sumi believes her struggles are also linked with other struggles. So she is associated with many other social movements including students’ rights, environment struggles, linguistic rights movements, and anti-caste struggles. She was selected to serve as a Lok Adalat or People’s Court Judge for the district of Coochbehar in 2017, and she received the Sonali’s Cubo award for her human rights �work in 2019.
It is admirable that Sumi takes a stand for all of the LGBTQ community and attests Maitrisanjog is not only a Trans-lead group, it is an LGBTQ support group. Moitrisanjog works for the rights of backward people who are backward due to religion and neglected due to low tangle. The management of Maitrisanjog Society is managing for those community people who may come to the centre for their daily cause, housing and food support.
