Giving Tuesday: Salem Unified Sports

Our Salem Unified Sports program launched with our inaugural season in January 2022. Since then, Salem High has had over seventy-five students with and without disabilities involved in Unified Strength and Conditioning, Unified Track and Field, Unified Basketball, the Special Olympics Youth Summit, the Salem Public Schools Special Olympics Unified Game Day, and our Unified Hype Squad for Staff Convocation. This year, we’ve also added a Unified PE class to our Program of Studies. Students have loved participating in a meaningful extension of our movement through the Physical Education department.

This inclusive movement is taking root in our classrooms, on the court, in our community, and beyond, and we’re just getting started!

As we continue building these meaningful and sustainable opportunities with our athletes and staff, we are looking for individuals and organizations in the community to partner with us. In our inaugural year, we spent approximately $7,000 on Unified Sports gear, equipment, team bonding activities, team meals, and more. Many other sports and extracurricular activities often participate in fundraisers like selling calendars, Tag Days, and more; however, fundraising is often not as accessible for our group as many of our students cannot participate due to various dynamics with medical conditions, appointments, transportation, and necessary behavioral support.
