#GivingTuesday for AFRICaide
Donation protected
15 years ago, I created a community organization called AFRICaide to reduce abject poverty in Africa. We focus on education because it is the best pathway to a viable future. Because Africa's population as a whole is very young (60% under the age of 25), it is imperative for us to center our work on education. To achieve this goal, we have partnered with schools and community organizations in Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo to make sure that vulnerable children, especially girls, get an education in order to build a better future for themselves.
We award scholarships to primary, secondary and college students to cover tuition, school supplies, uniforms and transportation. It has been rewarding to see AFRICaide award recipients graduate from high school and enter higher education. To date, we have 4 students currently attending university in Cameroon and 1 who has completed her undergraduate degree in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This year has been unlike any other in our work. Because the COVID-19 pandemic some of our students have become orphaned and their lives have changed dramatically. COVID-19 has forced schools to shift from the classroom to the home, exacerbating challenges that students were already experiencing in their pursuit of an education. Beside the need for textbooks, many of our students need electronic devices such as pads, laptops or cell phones to be able to receive instruction, study and do their homework.
One thing that has not changed this year is our commitment to sponsor the students in our program and to admit new ones. This sustained commitment is the only way we can empower communities one child at a time.
This past September, we were able to award scholarships only to students who were in our program last year. We received more applications than usual due to the loss of income of parents. We would like to offer scholarships to students who are out of school right now due to limited resources.
Unfortunately, we cannot do it alone. We need your support to help these students realize their dream.
Please support AFRICaide and our students with a generous contribution. Your donation will help provide:
1. Masks, soap and hand sanitizers for students, parents and teachers
2. Feminine hygiene products for girls
3. Tuition for K-12 and college students
4. Textbooks
5. School supplies
6. School uniforms for K-12 and vocational training students
7. Tablets, laptops and cell phones
Thank you for considering supporting our work on #GivingTuesday and beyond.
