Join Alexandrians Fight City Hall in the Appeals Court!

Elected officials and the circuit court in Alexandria, Virginia rebuffed the pleadings of more than 800 residents to protect and preserve Alexandria’s Old & Historic District by limiting the size of an overwhelming and architecturally unsuitable condominium proposed there. These actions set a precedent for encroachment of modern development in other cherished historic districts everywhere!

Instead of hearing us, the city and the circuit court have sided with a wealthy developer, approving his plan to turn a corner of the Historic District at 301 N. Fairfax Street – first laid out in 1749 by George Washington - into 90,000 square feet of concrete and glass – genuflecting to the developer against near unanimous citizen opposition over the past year.

We are appealing what we consider the wrong decision directly to the Court of Appeals of Virginia. We are asking the Court to reject the findings of the Alexandria Circuit Court, based on its incorrect interpretation of Alexandria’s zoning ordinance that would abdicate long term planning and development to the whims of commercial developers and forever imperil the beauty of the Old & Historic District.

Please help us fund this legal appeal to ensure that Alexandria pursues smart and balanced development that treats citizens as stakeholders in the decision-making process, rather than annoyances. The City Council’s rapacious densification platform to grow the City’s tax base must be balanced with respect for the national historic significance of Old Town that makes Alexandria both livable for its residents and a charming destination for all Americans.
