Klezmer Fiddlers Lockdown Project
Beregovski's Musical Treasures brought back to life
A stellar A-Z of klezmer string players is breathing fresh life into an ancient Jewish musical tradition, with a daily online broadcast of melodies dedicated to turning sorrow to joy.
Day by day over the past few weeks, we have invited you into our living rooms to share one of the word's best-kept musical secrets. In return we asked that you made a donation to help us carry on entertaining you during the lockdown - and beyond - and you have!
Scroll down to see the list of fabulous musicians who have been entertaining you.
Nigunim - Jewish songs without words - can be soulful, rapturous, dramatic, uplifting, reflective and more. Each is a tiny gem taking you on a musical journey away from everyday sorrows. Each has one melody, no harmony, and can be sung by one or many.
They're the perfect musical accompaniment to these challenging times, and they're designed to be catchy - you'll soon find yourself humming along!
The nigunim we'll be playing for you come from eastern Europe and span at least three centuries. These almost-forgotten treasures were painstakingly notated by Moshe Beregovski (1892-1961), a Soviet Jewish ethnomusicologist who made it his life's work to document Jewish folk music, and eventually fell foul of Stalin for his pains.
We'll beam musical solace, joy, and the opportunity for discussion into your home during this time of isolation, and at the same time bring to life a unique musical resource that's been languishing in dusty manuscripts for far too long.
Here's a nign sung by a lot of people in Munkács, in the early 1930s:
Your support will help us ensure that these precious tunes are heard, shared, enjoyed and endure for centuries more.
