Global Health Expedition
Donation protected
Four years ago, I embarked on an expedition around the world to learn first-hand the realities of the world and its people through meaningful travel. Aside from my typical backpacking, I have also been able to visit hospitals and clinics, assist with research projects, and provide assistance to local grassroots projects. Now, this fundraiser will be more focused on the development of a health clinic on Mfangano Island in Kenya.
The following are some of the goals of some of the places I have been able to fundraise for from my original campaign:
UVA Children's Hospital, Charlottesville, USA
Why not start at home? One would think that discovering that you have a debilitating disease called cancer when you’re just a child would be scary…but here, the children are fighters. This is largely due to the high-quality care that UVA provides, as well as the community donation and support network. As part of one of my current projects, Notes from Home, community members and students leave positive and encouraging notes for children at the hospital. With your donations, in conjunction with these notes, we can provide additional supplies and toys to spread love and positivity from the global community.
Angkor Hospital for Children, Siem Reap, Cambodia
The state of public healthcare in Cambodia is dire, with inadequate and unreliable services, corrupt clinics, and high rates of maternal mortality and communicable diseases. The mission of Angkor Hospital for Children is to offer higher quality care, in which doctors are paid well and patients are treated for free. Your donations will contribute to continuing its mission of offering the best and free medical services to these Cambodian patients through medical equipment and essential medicines.
And many more around the world.
You, regardless of the country you are from, can help in two ways: 1.) by donating money so that I can work with local health professionals to purchase the equipment or by 2.) spreading the word of this fundraiser to others. Just $10 can be carried great lengths around the world—20 vials of local anesthetic in Tanzania, almost 300 capsules of amoxicillin (antibiotic) in Bangladesh, or even much more in other countries. This may not be much in the grand scheme of things, but together we can start a ripple effect and improve, even just a little bit, the health outcomes of communities around the world.
I will periodically post updates, so you'll be able to see where specifically your donations are going to. Thanks for your time, and don't forget to share this with your friends and family!
