Background:
Nepal is currently in the midst of a deadly COVID-19 second wave, recording a shocking infection rate and deaths every day. The daily infection rate hovers around 9000 cases, with about 120+ deaths every day.  As. of May 14th, the country has recorded 431,191 total cases and 4466 deaths. (Source: Ministry of Health and Population, Nepal).

Nepal is experiencing a humanitarian crisis almost as bad as its neighbor - India, if not on par with it. Despite a strict lockdown that was put into place in the first week of May by the Government of Nepal to control the infection rate, cases have continued to rise, overwhelming the country’s fragile health care system. Furthermore, the cases' intensity is seemingly high due to the highly contagious and dangerous new strain of the virus, causing severe symptoms and fatalities even in young people. Currently, COVID-19 patients in Nepal are struggling to get basic healthcare facilities, including ambulances, oxygen support, ICU beds, nurse support, etc.; cremation sites are overwhelmed; healthcare workers are drained; people are out of jobs, and daily wage workers are struggling to make their ends meet.

Fundraiser:
Global Shapers Kathmandu Hub’s Shaping Mental health team is organizing a virtual fundraiser titled WellnessWeekends4Relief, in response to the second wave of COVID-19 in Nepal.

Our idea is to use social media platforms to ask for donations in exchange for wellness activities and classes hosted over 3 weekends. We will be hosting six (6) 1-hour sessions conducted on Saturdays and Sundays for the next weeks starting on May 15.

Our first session on 15 May is “Breathe and Stretch for Stress Relief,” led by Naviya Kafle, one of our current Shapers. So in each session, you can donate the amount you would want to contribute.

To attend, please upload a screenshot on this Google Form showing a donation of any amount you wish that's made on this Go Fund Me Fundraiser.

We will be diverting the funds we receive to organizations - Hami Nepal & Women for Human Rights Food Bank working tirelessly to address the crisis. Our goal is to raise as much money as we can to help those in need right now and offer programs that will address mental health struggles that a lot of us are going through right now.

We’re hoping for your support and wish to see you in our upcoming classes and workshops.

Please take care and stay safe!
