The Shandy Africa Project is an individual project that I created in 2013. This was something that I dreamed of since I was a kid. My main goal is to get kids living in the most destitute places and/or those without a family, off of the streets and into the classroom. I also help to provide medical care, food, bedding, clothing, and other necessities to families living in the slums, and to kids living in orphanages and safe houses.
My first trip to Africa in 2013 was an invaluable firsthand learning experience. I learned very quickly that you must be very selective with who you help and where you spend your time helping. I spent time making connections with the locals within each community I stayed/visited in Ghana and Tanzania. I also spent a majority of my time caring for, mentoring, and volunteer teaching kids of all ages in safe houses, orphanages, and private and public schools. With the help from individual donors, we paid off the school debt for 4 kids who had been kicked out of school because of their debt, tuition and fees for the new school year for 3 ambitious kids, provided shoes and socks for over 40 kids, school uniforms for 3 kids, school supplies for over 60 kids, medical attention for a few kids, tooth extraction and transportation for 1 child, clothing and necessities for many children, field trips and transportation for over 33 kids, bonus for 5 teachers, start up costs for vegetable business, firewood for a safe house, and food for many. I also created an environmental project for 900 kids at 2 different schools, in which I led in education and discussion, and then out into the neighborhood for trash pickup. At the end of this trip, it was a given that I would return the next year.
In 2014, I returned to Africa, this time going to Kenya, Uganda, and finally returning to Tanzania. This trip was catered even more towards education and long term sponsorship than the last. I ended up stumbling across a young boy smashing coal on the side of the road, as I did house visits in the slums. When I inquired about him, I found out his family's heart breaking story. I knew then that he and his siblings needed my help. I met their mother who had pretty much almost given up on life, and even considered poisoning her children because she felt helpless in providing them a better life. Her 1st wish was for her 4 children to return to school. Mission accomplished. I also spent time cleaning out mud houses, doing house visits in the slums, teaching English and P.E. to many age groups, cooking for kids, leading art therapy lessons to kids from the streets, taking kids on field trips that had never been exposed to anything outside of their immediate environment, and mentoring kids living in the slums and safe houses. We even helped an abused mother of 2 escape her drunkard, abusive husband of 11 years to a safer living environment. I also did a lot of research by foot to find an excellent school for a boy I had met in Tanzania in 2013, who lived in a safe house for kids from the streets. We found him an excellent and very reputable boarding school that he is now receiving good grades at!
Rather than blindly sending money to a large organization in faith that it will go directly towards a child in need, I actually travel to Africa, and hand select and directly work with these children. I take pride in honoring every dollar that is contributed to The Shandy Africa Project, so that it goes to someone or a family who need it the most. This is what sets our project apart from most others. Your caring hearts and contributions are not taken lightly!
The 5 kids that were mentioned from my trip in 2014, have been in school for almost a year now. These are the kids that The Shandy Africa Project is currently focusing on, and who I plan to visit and spend quality time with this summer to get updates and provide with things they need. The ultimate goal for these beautiful and ambitious kids, is to see them through college. I want them to reap the benefits long term, not just temporarily. That way they will have great opportunities one day to live out their own dreams and give back to their family and communities.
As a donor, you will be updated with the progress of the child/children you are helping to sponsor, videos, pictures, report cards, and any other information you inquire about. The Shandy Africa Project takes pride in serving the children and families in Africa with an honest an open heart. If you wish to provide for one of the orphanages/safe houses/schools I serve during my trips, then we can do it! If you wish to sponsor a different child than one of the 5, we can also make that happen! You get to determine just exactly who and where your donations will go. Anything you do will make an impact, so don't miss out on this opportunity to provide an education and necessities for a future leader of tomorrow! You will change their lives forever!
Thank you for your time in reading our story. I've raised most of the money for these kids by baking cookies and selling them locally, selling jewelry, doing annual shoe drives, and anything else I could think of. However, it is getting tougher and tougher each year to raise the funds to keep everything going. So we could definitely use your help! Any donation will be much appreciated, and given to the child/children/family of your desire. There is a total of 6% in fees taken out of your donation if you pay directly through gofundme. However, you are welcome to message us to get our business account number in which 100% of your donation will go where it is intended. We would then simply add it as an offline donation on gofundme, so that you can see our progress towards our overall goal. We look forward to having you join our global family!
