2020 has been a year full of surprises and unknowns. At times, it felt like I had no control of what was coming next, a feeling that I spent months resenting. Despite this, I felt the need to constantly remind myself that everything happens for a reason. That something good would come out of this unfortunate time; whether I realized it immediately or not.
This year, I felt myself not really looking forward to my birthday because it felt like just another day stuck in this cycle. But now I feel the need to use this day to celebrate and support a passion project of mine that has become incredibly meaningful.
I have always been someone that had a passion for social justice and civil rights movements. Being a black women that had to exist in primarily white spaces from the time I was 14 really forced me to understand more complicated issues that surrounded racism, misogyny, and prejudice. In college, I really focused a lot of my time on learning and educating myself while also speaking out on things that felt wrong to me.
When I first heard about the death of George Floyd this year, my heart sunk. I felt a feeling that unfortunately, I have felt many times before. Sadness, hopelessness etc. It felt like no matter how much I learned, and how much I spoke out, there was nothing I, as an individual, could do to change the trajectory of this conversation.
All of this changed when I met two twitter mutuals; two women that have become an instrumental part of who I am now and what has quickly become most important to me. We worked tirelessly for 3 days to put together a protest in Boston, not having the slightest clue how many people we were going to be able to bring together. It very quickly became clear to us that people in this city were looking for change. This is when Black Boston was born. There is a lot more work to be done in the city of Boston to push for tangible change and Black Boston aims to be the organization that gets the ball rolling.
In the past few months, my co-organizers and I have been working tirelessly to create an organization that works to create a community of Black people in Boston and surrounding cities who are passionate about building strong connections between one another and standing together to demand and create the change that we want to see.
This year, for my birthday, I am asking for you all to support me in this journey to build this beautiful organization from the ground up. Funds would go towards legal and filing fees, advertising and promotional materials and other startup costs. Every penny is deeply appreciated.
