WHO ARE WE?

Glory & Gore is an independent student film written and directed by young women aiming to carve a space for non-male creatives in the industry.

Born of fervent conversation and an affinity for novels such as M.L. Rio’s If We Were Villains, Donna Tartt’s The Secret History, Micah Nemerever’s These Violent Delights, and V.E. Scwhab’s Vicious, this project was written with the community we are a part of in mind. Plato’s The Symposium in particular triggered a deep-dive into the worlds of influential philosophers that involved a lifestyle of hedonism, debauchery, and traditional Grecian ideals. Glory & Gore is a modernization of these traditions, as well as a commentary on their nature—masculinity through a feminine lens.

At the very heart of this project is the desire to uplift people with marginalized genders and identities who so often are overshadowed by their male counterparts in the industry. While nonetheless, staying true to the words of Plato; This production is an exploration of the themes that inspired it, and an observation of dark academia and cult mentality from the female gaze.

OUR STORY

This past semester, we shot a pilot episode’s worth of what was originally meant to be a miniseries. We cast 7 characters, and hired a crew of almost 30 passionate young filmmakers. Our cast is made up of exclusively men, therefore we placed great emphasis on hiring as many non-male crew members as possible. We’re proud to say that we succeeded, and built a team of almost entirely non-male students who collaborated brilliantly to bring our pilot episode together.

On November 4th, things began to change. We compiled a series of behind-the-scenes clips from our very first day on set and shared the video online. As of today, it has garnered nearly 7 million views. People have flooded our inboxes with kind words, excitement and anticipation surrounding the project’s release, countless questions, and a shared passion for the story we aim to tell. The significance of this has been remarkable—to witness people loving this production before it has even been made has been incredibly motivating.

And so, we are proud to announce that Glory & Gore is becoming something much greater than a pilot episode. This April, we are filming a 40 minute short that will serve as a proof-of-concept piece for production companies and film festivals alike. As an independent student production, we cannot do this without your help.

CONTEXT, SETTING & THEMES

The ancient Grecian tradition of the Symposium. A space for men of great stature to share in the intellectual exchange of ideas. Drunken discussion over the keystones of life—philosophy and poetry— backdropped by live music. This was the setting of the early Symposium, and thus the very thing The Kingsbridge College Symposium Club was founded upon.

The club had always had a reputation, consisting of only the finest men at Kingsbridge (that is to say, the wealthiest). Rumors surrounding heinous discussion and choice “entertainment” at club meetings quickly snowballed into tales of a cult of excess rather than an academic organization. Debauchery, self-aggrandizement, the depths of pleasure that one could reach within themselves: Kingsbridge began to realize these to be the things their esteemed Symposium Club was actually concerned with.

Specifically, while it was under the presidency of Brooks Vaughn, an unrestrained hedonist fueled by extravagant wealth.

Following an especially despicable rumor, the school couldn’t turn away from the attention the Symposium had drawn any longer. The club was suspended for one year, and Vaughn was immediately removed from the institution entirely. When it came time to reinstate a president, the school thought it best to have the member of the highest academic standing take the president’s seat in hopes that it may change the tide for the club’s future.

Things were different. They had to be. Cassius Sinclair made sure of that.

The Symposium was about discussion again, the dissemination of ideas. Cassius knew he’d be turning the club on its head, but were these men not the very best at Kingsbridge after all? And were their fathers not our senators—our leading entrepreneurs? Surely they were there for good reason.

Word began to travel once again soon after he stepped into his role; Not about activity in the Symposium or any of its current members, but about Brooks and his suspected return.

This is a story about power: How one man’s downfall becomes that of many. High-society reaching egregious lows. The lengths at which we’ll go, what we’re willing to take as well as what we’re willing to throw away. Glory & Gore is born of Grecian tradition and ancient philosophy just as much as it is meant to reflect the very things we’ve witnessed. A self-indulgence in man that withstands the test of time.

YOUR IMPACT

We value absolutely any and all contributions made to this production.

Quite literally anything helps. Your contributions help us budget for a variety of necessities in order to make this project possible:
  • Renting higher-grade equipment to better bring our vision to life.
  • Helping our crew transport that equipment safely from point A to point B.
  • Attaining quality costume pieces and production design.
  • Feeding our cast and crew on-set.
  • Securing private and public locations.
  • Marketing ourselves on a professional level.
  • Film festival submissions and distribution efforts.
...among other things. For example, we recently held an event on-campus to fundraise, showcase our new logo alongside a live performance by our composer, and invite members of our college community into the world of Glory & Gore! We were able to allocate a small portion of your donations to making this evening possible (and profitable)!

Creating a professional product as well as maintaining that same professionalism on set is something we have always prioritized, and your support allows us to most effectively facilitate these commitments.

We sincerely appreciate your time and consideration in supporting our production. It truly could not be more of a passion project than it is. This was once a mere conversation in a dorm room. Bringing it to life has taken more than excitement alone—we have dedicated ourselves to this project in ways we did not know possible. We cannot wait to continue forward from here! Glory & Gore means the world to us, as do each and every one of you who are able to support us in whatever way that you can.
