Chris Mason

Hi, my name is Micah Horton and I am fundraising for one of my best friends but more than that a husband, father and Battalion Chief Chris Mason. On April 3rd Chris suffered from a Dural arterial ventricular fistula (DAVF).

Chris and his wife were on vacation in Pismo Beach when he started acting abnormal and was promptly taken to a nearby hospital where he had a grand mal seizure. By the end of the day a Neurologist had identified what was going on with Chris and he was immediately transported code 3 to Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara where he underwent a procedure to occlude the fistula. He was hospitalized for a week, but his friends and family were so grateful he woke up and had use of all of his limbs. However, Chris and his family still have an uphill battle ahead of them.

Chris and his family are still adjusting to the new normal of life. There is still excessive swelling surrounding the area that is causing hearing problems, and excruciating headaches. He is on a number of new medications that he takes multiple times a day and has routine appointments with neurologists to monitor his brain status. His deficits are cognitive and hopefully temporary as the swelling goes down.

Your support during this time will help with the cost of hospital stay, surgery, ambulance transport, and travel costs back and forth to Santa Barbara for additional care. Chris is not able to work at this point and his return to work is still unknown. We are all hopeful he will make a full recovery and be able to return to work as a Battalion Chief, but the future is unknown.
