In December 2017, healthy and happy 20 year old Liam Comyn was first diagnosed with T-cell lymphoblastic non-hodgkin's lymphoma. After going through extensive radiation and chemotherapy, unfortunately the cancer returned. Liam endured further treatments and received a stem-cell transplant from his Dad, John, on May 30th of this year. The transplant went well and even with an ICU stay and some major complications along the way, Liam and his family were very hopeful and thought that he was once again in remission.
Unfortunately he woke up with the all too familiar back pain on Day 90 after the transplant. The doctors gave them the devastating news that the cancer had returned and he now has two masses in his abdomen that are inoperable. He is taking steroids to hopefully shrink the tumours so that a new drug can be trialed. The steroids and the new drug are only to give him some more time, they are not curative.
Throughout this process, Liam’s mom Melissa, who works as a Registered Practical Nurse, has taken leaves from her work for most of the past year and a half to be with Liam for his numerous appointments, treatments and for every day support. Melissa, John and Liam have had numerous trips from Paisley to Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton and to London Health Sciences. Months on end with decreased income and increased expenses for hotels, gas, food, etc have led to some financial difficulty.
This family has been through so much, more than most of us will experience in a lifetime. They are kind, generous people and are amazing advocates for mental health in our community. It only makes sense to give back to those who already give so much.
They want to, and deserve to enjoy their time together. Hopefully we can alleviate some of the financial stress so they can really embrace it. They need all the support they can get, whether it be monetary, prayers, good vibes, well wishes, whatever you can give. If you can donate they thank you from the bottom of their hearts.
