Can you imagine what it's like to be a new mother in prison? There are nine prison nursery programs in America, meaning that there are nine programs supporting women who become mothers behind bars to actually be with (and mother) their infants.
The details of what's available to these moms varies from program to program. Some get to be with their babies up to two years and some get a year or less. Some have access to lactation consultants and other breastfeeding resources and some don't.
The Milkin Mama, founded by Francie Webb, is partnering with these nine nursery programs to teach incarcerated mamas the art of hand expression. If you've never heard of hand expression, it's an alternative to pumping--using your hands to get the milk out! In cases where women don't have access to pumps (some of these nursery programs, for instance), it's a way for mothers to continue getting breastmilk to babies even with less than ideal circumstances.
We're looking to deliver instructional videos and copies of Francie's book, Go Milk Yourself: You Have Power, Express It , to these nine programs ASAP. The only thing standing in the way is creating the funds to support us in acquiring and shipping the materials.
It's our intention to support each and every incarcerated mother in realizing and connecting with her innate power; recognizing her unlimited potential to create the resources she needs to support herself and her family; and feeding her babies with her own body...on her own terms.

Funds are allocated for:
Processing, creation and shipping of both DVDs and VHS tapes to the 9 nursery programs (with back-up copies). Purchasing and shipping books to distribute to mothers and for ongoing use in prison libraries. A TV and DVD player to be donated to the Illinois Moms + Babies Program and the development of an in-person training program.
