Go Team Mo - Cancer Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma

Help Maureen Beat Cancer

I am writing on behalf of my good friend Maureen, who unbelievably is battling her 3rd life threatening disease in 6 years.  Maureen is 46 years young, and is a single mom of three children (12, 15 and 27) and is a new grandmother.  Her friends, family and her faith are her entire support system.

A few years back when Maureen started having issues with her sight, a brain tumor was discovered and successfully operated on.  It grew back and 10 months later, the same surgery was  was performed as well 6 weeks of radiation.  During this time, a group of her friends started Go Team Mo, a Facebook group, making and selling “Go Team Mo” bracelets to fund raise for a juicer, taxis’ to the hospital and so on.  Our mission helped us all focus on achieving our goals which also meant that Mo would be OK!

Just two short months ago, Mo was experiencing a pain in her side, which she thought was simply a pulled abdominal muscle.  Within two weeks this little golf ball nodule grew into a potato and after 3 endoscopies, many CT scans, PET scan, and exploratory surgery to remove a biopsy, we have the devastating diagnosis of SAROMATOID MESOTHELIOMA.  This a rare and extremely aggressive cancer which offers a grim prognosis and an incomprehensibly short amount of time left.  Besides the initial tumor, her abdominal cavity is covered in other smaller growing tumors – surgery is not an option.

Although we are starting on chemo and have a great oncologist working with her, we are fund raising to pay for Precision Oncology.  Genetic testing will pinpoint the type of cancer.  With this knowledge, a treatment plan will target the cancer cells. It is FDA approved and the oncologist is on board with it and will work with the team. This is leading edge technology used in other countries but is not yet available in the public health system here. Go to the website of the Canadian Cancer Society for more information on Liquid Biopsy.  We are optimistic about the outcome now.

This treatment comes at a price … $25 000.  In addition this hefty cost, there are immunotherapies available which may have additional costs or trials in other cities so we are hoping to plan for any possible treatment to save Mo's life.

My friend Mo is a fighter, this you should know. In the past 6 years, she has beat two brain tumors, a long expensive court battle to maintain joint custody of her children, a grandchild born ill and requiring a heart transplant, and ex who stole the family dog … the list goes on.  You can’t make this up. Mo has fought each battle, depleting her health, her energy and her bank account – but never her spirit.  I remember celebrating the new year together, our tight threesome of girls cheer’s to Mo, may this be an easy year, she deserves it.  Yet unbelievably, here we are.

Please support us in our quest to cure Mo.

Thanks for listening!
