A Buggie and Buff for Barbara
As many of you already know, my sister, Barbara, had a severe stroke last May. Through the grace of God and some remarkable people including her husband Bob, she is now at home, however still needing daily care and loving special therapy. From the moment she awoke completely immobile, she began her escape. She could only move fingers on her right hand. James, her son, who stood thru the early vigil understood. She was writing in the air! She has been a remarkable champion in the challenge she is facing Oh… what did she spell out for James? “Feet cold!” She has made us laugh joyfully through what anyone would consider a nightmare.
Her progress of today is nothing short of divine and we must give God credit for everything good. Her conversation is clear and her wisdom, creativity and sense of humor are in full force. Her strength is improving on her right side, which must carry more duties as the left side reconnects. She has moved her left knee and the left arm showed movement yesterday as she sneezed.
Hardly any of us expect to face such a challenge and certainly not the financial challenge of prolonged care of this type. Most of our Medicare and basic care insurance are geared for people who might find adequate recovery in a matter of100 days with light-weight services.
There are two things this Buggie and Buff for Barbara campaign is aimed toward.
1. Funds to buy Barb and Bob a used van with wheelchair lift so she can join him with friends eating out, etc. (Her therapist, Tekela, says… “Barbara, don’t fall in love with that wheelchair!”) So, we press on knowing that we will not need it forever.
2. Some help on her continued, targeted, and successful daily program managed by Tekela. As I noticed last night as Barb reached up to hold the device which lifts her in and out of bed. “Geeze Barb, your right arm looks like a 35 year old… You’re buff!!” We had a good smile over that. Let us help Barb get Buff!
Barbara has spent much of her life volunteering and supporting important organizational missions. This would be a wonderful time to give her a hand.
God Bless you for your help. Barb will be writing you.
