Port Townsend Athletic Club Needs Your Help!!

Help Save a Community Jewel!

On March 16th, 2020, Port Townsends's original Historic Downtown Health Club, "Port Townsend Athletic Club" (affectionately known as PTAC) was closed down due to the coronavirus pandemic mandate.
Being proactive, the PTAC team immediately went into action cleaning, repairing and tackling long overdue projects using the  "temporary closure" as an opportunity to make the club better and safer for our community and members.
In doing so we have exhausted all of our personal funds, credit, and bank loans along with PPP to assist employees.

Due to the ongoing pandemic restrictions, fitness clubs have been required to close completely. This continued closure of our operations has threatened the ability for PTAC to reopen when the health restrictions are lifted, and we desperately need your help in raising $200,000 to cover ongoing rent, insurance, taxes, utilities and a limited payroll for a few key employees.

Hundreds of hours of hard work over the last several months have been put into  completely overhauling the club for member safety and enjoyment.
Resulting in an amazing makeover for community health and wellbeing.
All of which would not have been possible without the generous efforts by volunteers, loyal friends, wonderful members, and the support of other local small businesses.

We want to share our amazing efforts with our members and be here for YOU.

When this current crisis abates, it will be more important than ever to have quality health and recreational facilities available to help our community rebuild  physically and emotionally.

We thank you for your consideration and support during this difficult time.

Kind Regards,

Teresa and the Team at PTAC

A History of Port Townsend Athletic Club

This unique and "Not your average gym", Is steeped in history and character.
It is truly a 'one of a kind'  facility with deep local roots that has survived for over 120 years.

Originally Port Townsend Athletic Club formed as a football team known as the "Cougars"  playing their first game against the Seattle Athletic Club on Oct 7, 1893.
Coached by C.H. "Fatty" Smith ( 1895-1896) and Winslow Mc Curdy (1904)
Although the first game was a 40-0 loss,
in the clubs defense,  only 2 players had ever played football or even seen a game played.
In 1912 the next version of PTAC was in operation in the Hill & Landes Building located on Water Street.
A popular downtown hangout, the club was a place to burn off a little extra steam, socialize, shoot pool, lift weights and occasionally host championship wrestling matches.
Unfortunately the Hill & Landes Building burned down in 1959, recorded as the most damaging fire since the burning of the Union Dock warehouse in 1940.

In the early 1980's Port Townsend Athletic Club was again revived by two locals  who had a passion for racquet ball and a corner location down in the old industrial end of town.
John Buhler and Bernie Lundgren reached out to friends and family to solicit funds, build support, and the club came back to life. Located in the Original home of the Port Townsend Brewing Company which they turned into a local racquet club and gym.

Since 2007, a local trainer and entrepreneur purchased the struggling facility and began reinventing and redirecting the club. With the support of the Port Townsend community, an amazing staff and instructors, Teresa has  transformed  PTAC into part of Port Townsends historic culture.

It is a true labor of love built through years of blood, sweat and tears.

We at PTAC are a  team of dedicated professionals, who have loyally served our members for almost 40 yrs,  and we want to continue to be be here for YOU,
all our beautiful community members.

Don't let this Pandemic ruin all the good things about our amazing little town and all the good it has to offer.
Whether a life long resident, or new to our town, it will be a shame to not have the the enjoyment of health and connection that only can be had from a club like PTAC...

We need your help to be here for you, our amazing  and unique community.
We are asking for your financial support to see it through this crisis so we can be here for you and do our part to help put all our lives back on a better path after the current situation becomes resolved...

Thank you for your consideration and support...

PTAC loves you and we miss all our beautiful people!!
