On Friday, October 25th, Joanna the potbellied pig suffered a ruptured disc while playing in the field. JoJo came to us from a sanctuary last month where she had a bit of a bad reputation. JoJo wasn't super friendly to the volunteers, but we think she was just misunderstood. :) Ever since she has discovered the good life in Ohio, she has been playful and happy with her brothers, Malcolm and Buster.
After the accident and a poor prognosis for recovery, Brian and I decided that we had to give her a chance-- she had only had the "good life" for a month and a sad history of "tea cup" breeding gone awry. [Click here to read the truth about tea cups.] We loaded her in the mini-van and headed up to our alma mater, The Ohio State University.
The wonderful team of doctors at The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center assessed JoJo and determined that she was a candidate for surgery- a hemilaminectomy. (Keep in mind that this would be groundbreaking surgery considering it hasn't been done on a pig before!) The surgery went great and JoJo's ruptured disc was removed and now she is working very hard on her recovery.
The most exciting news was that JoJo got her wheels on November 1st. We are thrilled that she likes her cart and feels more independent when she uses it.
Our priority is providing JoJo with the best care possible. She has a wonderful team of doctors and caregivers to offer her the best shot at regaining the use of her legs. Your contribution will help us continue to support her medical needs.
