Call to Action:
My name is Justin Mugabe and I am seeking your support as my family has been impacted by the Nyiragongo volcanic eruption in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo that destroyed thousands of homes and displaced hundreds of thousands of people during the night of Saturday, May 22, 2021.
About Me:
I am from the Congo and am a recent Pitzer College alumnus where I graduated with my B.A. in Economics. I devoted my undergraduate career to giving back to my community through my agriculture business. Our goal is to create living wages and local jobs for those living in the DRC. While my local business has been impacted by the disaster, my main priority is my family and the unfortunate events that have affected their safety.
Goma Disaster:
Since Saturday, there have been at least 259 earthquakes in the city of Goma leaving thousands of people houseless, hundreds of children reported lost, and at least 32 dead. The volcanic rock has created extreme heat conditions and a toxic air quality all throughout the city. While I was lucky enough to find shelter in Kinshasa shortly after having to flee my home in Goma, my family was not able to leave.
Steven and Mami, my older brother and sister in law, are among the victims who lost their homes and have no shelter. Their home has been destroyed and is now covered in volcanic rock. My younger sister, Furaha, has also been displaced.
The purpose of this fundraiser is to help cover the expenses for my family to access safe shelter and rebuild their home. My family has been devastated by this disaster and would appreciate the support from my peers. Any help is greatly appreciated for this emergency situation.
