Good Samaritan Injured in Accident

The good Samaritan is how many have been referring to Victoria Moore since Friday, November 17, but the title has fit her and her husband for so much longer than that. Their lives have been ones of service to the country and community.

As a young married couple, they committed themselves to military life; Michael honorably served his country as a US Army military police officer for 20 years. His service included several tours in the Middle East and Guantanamo Bay after 9/11, his wife and sons supporting him along the way. Victoria has devoted her life to the service of the community through work with local rescue missions and homeless programs, volunteering at her church, and working with local youth at the Good Spirit Foundation.

It was no surprise to hear they had interrupted their date night on Friday, November 17th to stop and render aid to those in need. While Michael pulled people out of a burning vehicle, Victoria was assisting one of the men on the side of the road when their lives were suddenly changed forever. An impaired driver struck Victoria with a vehicle and killed the man who was next to her.

In the flash of a moment, the future changed; a young woman made a choice, and that choice changed the trajectory of so many lives, including Victoria, Michael, and their family. When the car hit Victoria, it badly damaged her left leg, dislocated her right hip, and fractured her pelvic bone. With his military training and quick thinking, Michael saved her life with a tourniquet. Today she is alive, but her left leg has been amputated, and she faces multiple surgeries and a tremendous recovery ahead.

In an instant, this couple went from enjoying a date, helping to plan their oldest son’s upcoming wedding, and enjoying the fruits of their hard labor to not knowing what the future holds. The tremendous tasks of recovery are ahead, and their life plans have suddenly become uncertain, switching from planning how many years until retirement to ensuring Michael can take enough time off work to be with his wife during recovery. Instead of deciding which tablecloths for their son's wedding, they now pray she will be out of the hospital in time to make it, even if it's in a wheelchair.
