Dreaming of Good Deed Donuts

Donation protected
Some things just feel food. Doing good feels good. Eating an awesome made from scratch donut feels good. We think that if we can raise money by raising some dough covered with sprinkles that it could be a tasty way to spread some cheer, not to mention good will in our community.

Purchasing and installing a commercial donut machine has been in our 5 year plan, at a savings rate of about $10-$20/day this would take us to 2019 for the magical donut day.  We currently make about a dozen baked donuts a day to complement the baked goods here at our family owned business, the Kingston Candy Bar. For special orders and events we can make up to 12 dozen but that ties up our equipment and means none of our signature cookies or candies get made that day. When we make those incredible yeasted donuts our daily yield is less because they are so much more difficult to make without proper equipment. Bummer for folks who come in for our awesome cookies and giant peanut butter cups on special order donut days!

What if? What if we did a GoFundMe for the purchase, installation and needed shoppe upgrades to do this now and still set aside that same $10-$20 each day but instead chose to donate it? That would mean we could make our awesome gourmet donuts now, sell them, make a profit now  AND help charitable causes that help other people (and animals!).

So that's the plan.

It's not something we "need" like so many other worthy causes that people have listed on GoFundMe. This is a chance to connect with some and help others while we strive to earn a living in this small family business.

We have built our candy store jar by jar, never using credit. This has worked for us. We live frugally without credit cards and are as generous as we can be to those in need, some would argue too generous. We pay for what we need or wait to buy it, or don't buy it at all.

Unfortunately it also means we don't have a credit history to speak of which makes a small business loan exceptionally challenging (not to mention expensive at a higher risk interest rate!).  We gave that option some thought and then decided to just try and save for a few years until we have  the money or give up the donut dream.

Then, someone smarter than any of us, suggested we try this campaign and keep saving but just donate that saved money while we are increasing our income capacity.

So that's what we are doing with Good Deed Donuts.  If we can raise the funds to purchase and install the machine, fire suppression and filtration system, upgrade the floor, walls and electric where necessary then why not continue to set aside that money we planned to set aside and do some good with it? And since you're helping those donuts to get made we think you deserve to help decide where those donations from donuts are going.

It will be fun! It will be yummy! And, good deeds are just as good as a great donut for making your day better:)

Well then, it's time to make the donuts! Shall we?
