Medical care for Goodluck

Hi, my name is Barbara Miklos and I am raising funds for Goodluck Laizer, Arusha Tanzania.

Goodluck was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and had his thyroid removed in April, 2022. After they removed his thyroid, it was necessary to kill remaining cancer cells so he was given radiation therapy in the summer of 2022. In December 2022 he could not breathe and was rushed to the hospital. They inserted a tracheal tube which he had for over a year.

Drs in Tanzania were not able to remove the tube or even adequately describe his prognosis. With the trach tube, he was not able to work as a safari guide and was in pain and discomfort. As a young vital man, it weighed heavily on him. He consulted with doctors in East Africa but no one was even able to give him a straight answer or a plan.

Last year a friend got him an appointment with an expert in Cape Town South Africa, 3000 miles from his home, where they removed the tracheal tube and did laser treatments to heal his vocal cords. This trip was paid for by his friends through this Gofundme. While in Cape Town, the doctors discovered that the cancer had already spread to other places. At that time, they told him that they would not treat the cancer because he was healthy and the treatment could have serious side effects. But they told him that he needed to return in 4 months to have a DOTANOC PET CT scan. That was almost a year ago.

Knowing how expensive the trip and medical care is, we waited. But we know the clock is ticking and are asking for help. In order to get the care he needs, we now need an additional $2600. The first trip cost 1400 which we raised and spent last year. This trip with the scan will cost 2600 for a total of $4000 for both trips. The $2600 we need for the upcoming trip includes 1800 for the scan, 140 for the consultations and the rest for the 3 day bus journey and lodging and food. As of 1/2, we are $850 short. All help in any amount is greatly appreciated.

The good news is that because of the help he received before, his voice has come back somewhat. Not enough to be heard in a safari car so he can do his job as a safari guide, but enough to talk to family and friends.

As his long time friend, I am raising money for him to make sure he can make the trip and get care.
